Dr. Rao was first introduced to the field of medicine when he visited his grandfather, a well-known General Practitioner, in a small town in India. Despite having limited resources, he saw how much the patient’s appreciated his grandfather’s care and compassion as well as his medical acumen. He witnessed the transformation of many patients’ lives through excellent medical care delivered by his grandfather, which served as his motivation to enter the field of medicine.
Dr. Rao was born and raised in New Jersey. He obtained his undergraduate Bachelors of Science degree in Bio-psychology from the University of Michigan and graduated with Class Honors. He obtained his Medical Doctorate from St. George’s University School of Medicine. Through his internship in Internal Medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, he learned a great deal about the pathophysiology of the human body and the corresponding challenging treatments required to improve patient’s lives. He added to this knowledge base during his residency in Anesthesiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center where he was awarded distinguished honors in Neurological and Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology upon graduation.
Dr. Rao went on to further specialize in Interventional Pain Medicine as a Fellow at Mt. Sinai College of Medicine. He then worked at Baylor College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in Pain Medicine where he educated fellows and residents. He also was fortunate enough to be able to work at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Dr Rao assisted in enhancing the pain clinic to begin providing advanced pain management techniques to the active-duty soldiers with war-related chronic pain issues. He was the first to bring spinal cord stimulation to Fort Hood and was able to treat chronic neuropathic pain using cutting edge technology. He continues to feel that having the opportunity to assist the Army pain physicians as well as treating wounded soldiers was an honor and privilege.
Dr. Rao relocated to Maryland to be closer to his family. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter. He became the Medical Director of The Spine Center in Frederick and enjoyed improving the quality of life and functionality of his patients. He continues to reach out to the community and volunteers at the Hepatitis Clinic through the Frederick Department of Health. He wishes to continue to help the community with ongoing outreach efforts through, the SimCare PASS Foundation, the non-profit organization he co-founded with his wife. He has most recently founded the Pain and Spine Specialists (PASS) of Maryland in 2012, Shakthi Health & Wellness Center with his sister Dr. Jyothi Rao, and more recently The SCS Institute in 2014.
Aside from his practice, Dr. Rao gives numerous lectures to the community and to colleagues discussing advances in the field of Pain Medicine. He continues to attend conferences and courses to master the most up to date interventional pain management procedures in order to provide superb patient care and obtain sustainable outcomes. He is currently enrolled in an Advanced Fellowship program in Anti-Aging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine and a Master’s Degree Program through the University of South Florida in Metabolic Medicine and Nutrition to provide alternative and integrative treatment options. He is eager to provide these therapeutic options through Shakthi Health & Wellness Center (a DhruvaCare Enterprise), which will be opening later this year.
Dr. Rao has been providing patient care for over a decade, treating his own patients and formulating complex treatment paradigms on an on-going basis. His goal is to be able to engage patient’s on an on-going manner to improve their lives, to impact the overall quality of life and functionality, and to provide a nurturing and caring environment to do so. He stresses the importance of evaluating the patient as an individual and treating the mind and body. A comprehensive treatment to chronic pain is the only way to provide the greatest opportunity for recovery and sustained benefit.
Dr. Rao and his staff pride themselves on treating each and every patient with the same respect and care they would for their own family. They realize and stress that each patient deserves the time and care to express their individual concerns, which demand a truly individualized treatment. Each and every patient shall be granted the appropriate amount of time to be evaluated and given ample time to discuss the treatment paradigm. The goal remains to treat everyone who enters through the doors as family.
